Finding Yourself by Getting Lost
Pairing Mysteries and Travel Destinations
Mystery: Richard M. Brock’s Hurricane Canoe ★★★★★
Destination: Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
How many times this past week did you want to hide away in some small cabin or yurt in the woods by yourself and pause your life long enough to hear your own thoughts?
After a long work week?
Yes, you’ll always have free choice how you like to recharge, but if not as a habit, consider visiting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness as an experience you will always treasure.
Question: You feel swamped at work, life, and are at the end of your personal resources.
Where can you go to get lost in your thoughts without a thousand distractions to drain you?
Answer: Please consider the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, located within the Superior National Forest, to unwind.
You may still be distracted, but if you are, it will be due to stunning natural beauty that makes you grateful to be alive.
To give you an idea how big the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) is, let’s compare it with the Mall of America.
First, the similarities:
Both the Mall of America and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are the largest of their kind.
Both MOA and part of BWCAW are in Minnesota.
The Mall of America has 5.6 million square feet of available space.
The BWCAW has 1,090,000 acres, which is equal to 47,480,400,000 square feet, so both places are easily able to accommodate walkers.
Both the BWCAW canoe routes and the MOA corridors have interesting things to look at, depending upon your interests and preferences.
For the BWCAW, there are trails that go on for 1,200 miles.
Over 2,000 primitive campsites are available for situating near the 1,175 lakes that are within the BWCAW.
Finally, the differences:
Mall of America has more than 40 million visitors each year, but the Boundary Waters Canoe Area has 150,000 visitors each year. There are significant differences in the probability of how many people you’ll run into when you visit.
It’s always a matter of personal preference how a person disconnects from stress and reconnects afresh, but on days I need to reclaim my peace of mind, I choose peaceful, quiet places like the BWCAW.
On days when I feel I have many things on my to-do list and I want to be efficient while also enjoying the place and space, I pick MOA.
Disclaimer: I’m also a fan of both the MOA, as well as the BWCAW.
